I went to my late father’s (and also his late father, mother, brothers,and sisters) grave at Pengkalan Jalur, Lubok Pulau, Tutong on the 3rd Syawal 1429H/4th October 2008. There, I recited the Surah Yassin and Doa Arwah.
Then, I poured the aying asah-asahan (water mixed with scented wood) on my father’s grave as well as on the graves of his parents, brothers, and sisters. The ritual is followed by my wife and my two children.
The following photo shows my son and my daughter are pouring the aying asah-asahan. Actually, this is not my father’s grave. They are pouring the extra aying asah-asahan on other people’s graves, after they have poured aying asah-asahan to their late grandfather and his late family. Just, to do a good deed to the others.

On the 19th September 2008 (today), I went to Batu Agau graveyard together with my wife and my children to join the others visiting the grave of my wife’s late grandmother.
Around the grave of my wife’s late grandmother, the Surah Yassin and tahlil prayer are recited for her. Then, aying asah-asahan (water mixed with scented wood) is poured over her grave. Lastly, the children (including the “big children”) received sadaqah in the form of money gift, in which its pahala (rewards for good deed) is intended to be given to the departed one.

Bandar Seri Begawan, 7 August 2008 – Teachers from primary schools in Brunei IIB area attended a Bertahlil and Doa Arwah ceremony that is held today at the hall of Tentera Laut Diraja Brunei Primary School, Muara.
The special guests at the function are Lt.Colonel Abdul Halim bin Haji Mohd. Hanifah, the Commander of Royal Brunei Navy, and Cikgu Awang Aidin bin Haji Abu Bakar, the Acting Assistant Director of Primary Education Section of the Department of Schools.
The recital of Surah Yassin, Tahlil and the Doa Arwah is led by Mohd. Amin bin Haji Salim, the Imam of Tanah Jambu Mosque.
The ceremony is organised by the Committee of Headmasters and Assistant Headmasters of Primary Schools in Brunei IIB with the cooperation of Tentera Laut Diraja Brunei Primary School and the Royal Brunei Navy.

Nowadays, it is a common practice among Bruneian who can afford one to print personalised Surah Yassin books for their family members who has passed away, especially for their parents. Ours (photo above), for our father, are printed at Government Printing Department for BND1.50 each. Printing cost depends upon the number of pages and the size of the book. Ours, the thin and small one, only have Surah Yassin, Doa Yassin, Tahlil Arwah and Doa Tahlil inside. The thick and big one may have more doas and short surahs inside, including the Solat Wirid and doa.
The personalised Surah Yassin usually have printed something like below in the inside page of the front cover:
Khusus diwakafkan dan dihadiahkan pahalanya kepada ……… (name or list of names of those who has passed away) yang telah kembali ke Rahmatullah pada ……… (date of passed away in Hijriah and in Masihi).
Semoga roh Allahyarham dicucuri rahmat dan dimasukkan ke dalam golongan orang-orang yang beriman, beramal soleh dan dimasukan ke dalam golongan ahli-ahli Syurga.
Amin, Amin, Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin. AL-FATIHAH.
The Surah Yassin books are usually given to those who attend the Bertahlil ceremony. Ours are given to those who come to the Bertahlil ceremony for my late father who has passed away 40 days ago (Among the Bruneian, this Bertahlil ceremony which is held in the 40th days is called Makan 40 or Makan 40 Hari).The Yassin book are also given to selected mosque(s) and among friends.
Giving Surah Yassin books is a kind of amal jariah hoping that as long as the Surah Yassin books are read by someone, those name(s) who is/are written in the books will continuously receive the pahala that is intended for them. Of course, those who recite the Surah Yassin, Tahlil Arwah and the doas will still get the pahala without any deduction (I believe) because they do a good deed to those who has passed away.
p/s: Please do not limit the good deed to giving out the Surah Yassin books only. Donate money in any amount to any humanitarian fund, such as the Brunei Darussalam’s Humanitarian Aids for Myanmar Nargis Cyclone Victims and China Earthquake Victims, is also a good deed. Those who has passed away can receive the pahala when someone who is still alive have the intention that the pahala is to be given to them. As I have said above, (I believe) you still get the pahala without any deduction because you do a good deed to those who has passed away.
